About the Role
We are seeking a driven and qualified Relief Captain to oversee vessel operations and ensure the highest standards of safety and service. This role requires a dynamic leader who can adapt to various responsibilities, stepping in as needed to support both the crew and operations.
This role will champion the onboard team and foster a best-in-class customer experience. Safety, reliability, and passenger satisfaction are our commitments to its passengers. To achieve our reliability commitment and support our team, Our Relief Captain will command two brand new state-of-the-art, purpose-built Damen 4212 high speed (fast ferry) vessels.

Responsibilities
This position involves dual responsibilities as both Captain and Mate.
Key Responsibilities:
Vessel Operations Management:
- Oversee all vessel operations, including navigation, maintenance, and compliance with government and industry regulations.
- Ensure the vessel's seaworthiness prior to each departure, regardless of role.
Crew Training and Mentorship:
- Train and mentor crew members on safety procedures, fostering a culture of safety and preparedness
- Participate in onboarding and training for new hires, seasonal staff, and contractors.
Team Supervision:
- Supervise and support the onboard crew, promoting teamwork and acting as a cultural steward for the brand.
- Collaborate with senior managers and fellow captains to enhance service organization and meet customer needs.
Safety and Emergency Preparedness:
- Uphold safety protocols for all activities, ensuring compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Ensure the crew is trained and prepared for drills and emergency scenarios, adapting leadership as needed.
Operational Oversight:
- Oversee the completion of monthly work orders, vessel operations, and annual equipment refits.
- Assist with regulatory inspections, ensuring readiness and compliance.
Process Improvement:
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and reliability.
- Foster a collaborative environment that encourages feedback and innovative solutions.
Guest Experience Enhancement: Deliver a consistently positive guest experience by leading or supporting service initiatives as required.
Safe Navigation: Safely navigate the vessel, providing clear direction to crew members and maintaining accurate records of personnel and resources.
Training and Development: Actively participate in training exercises, supporting the development of all personnel on board.
Flexibility in Role Assignment:
- The individual will dynamically transition between Captain and Mate responsibilities based on operational needs, demonstrating adaptability and a comprehensive understanding of both roles to ensure optimal vessel performance.
Requirements
- Valid Transport Canada Master 3000 Gross Tonnage TC certification or equivalent
- Reciprocal Agreement candidates are encouraged to apply (Certifications from Australia, Ukraine, UK, Ireland etc…)
- Ability to legally work within Canada (Work permit, PR, Citizen)
- Valid STCW Certificates
- Valid Canadian SFM
- Passenger Safety Management (a bonus)
Bonus: Knowledge of the navigation of the Salish Sea and /or experience on routes similar in nature

Compensation
$48.07 - $53.84 per hour
