About the Role
The Safety Officer/Deputy DPA plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the fleet. This position supports the Marine Operations Superintendent/DPA in implementing and maintaining the company’s Safety Management System in compliance with Transport Canada regulations and the ISM Code. Working closely with the Marine and Technical superintendents for operational oversight, safety management, environmental compliance, and team development. This role requires a proactive and detail-oriented individual with a strong understanding of maritime operations and safety management.

Key Responsibilities
Operational:
- Act as Fleet Captain or Mate as needed to maintain operational reliability.
- Support day-to-day fleet operations, ensuring vessels operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and company standards.
- Rotating on-call duties/days in lieu to support after-hours operational and crewing needs.
- Develop and implement operational procedures to enhance vessel performance and guest experience.
- Assist with vessel schedules, crew assignments, and maintenance activities to ensure continuity.
- Monitor vessel performance metrics and provide actionable insights for improvement.
- Reviewing and Maintain Navigation & Operational standards.
- Support marine project planning, execution, and monitoring in collaboration with the Marine Superintendent and Technical Superintendent.
- Maintain strong relationships with regulatory agencies, port authorities, and other external stakeholders.
- Stay updated on industry trends, regulatory changes, and technological advancements to ensure operational excellence.
Safety and Environmental Compliance:
- Support the maintenance and implementation of the SMS in alignment with ISM Code requirements.
- Conduct regular vessel inspections, audits, and incident investigations, identifying and addressing safety risks.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations, including MARPOL, by developing and maintaining Garbage and Fresh Water Management Plans.
- Chair Safety meetings to comply with ISM & OHS.
- Collaborate on safety and pollution prevention initiatives, promoting continuous improvement in safety culture.
- Contribute to management review meetings, supporting the achievement of safety and operational goals.
Team Development and Training:
- Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and familiarizing new crew members, fostering a strong safety culture and operational readiness.
- Plan and conduct safety drills and training sessions, both vessel and shore-side, in coordination with the Crewing and Training Coordinator.
- Provide performance feedback, coaching, and supervision to vessel crew.
- Facilitate communication between vessel crews, shore management, and external stakeholders.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Other duties may be assigned as required to support the operational needs of the organization.
Requirements:
- Valid Master Mariner or WKM – Near Coastal Transport Canada Certificate of Competency (COC).
- Valid SFM and supporting certifications for COC.
- Strong understanding of maritime operations, TC regulations, ISM Code, WorkSafe BC, and OHS.
- Proven experience in an operational or safety-focused role within the maritime industry.
- Leadership skills with a focus on fostering a safety-first culture and driving continuous improvement.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Desirable Qualifications:
- ISM Lead Auditor/DPA Certification.

Compensation
$96,000.00 - $136,000.00 per year
